CERRO GORDO COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A man under the influence of drugs intentionally drove head-on into an oncoming vehicle Sunday night before he swerved and caused his own vehicle to roll over in Cerro Gordo County. KIMT-TV reports Luis Rodriguez, 26, of Worthington, Minnesota, is accused of driving at an oncoming vehicle before both vehicles swerved to avoid colliding. Rodriguez suffered minor injuries.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A man was arrested after a standoff Sunday night in Des Moines after reports of a domestic dispute. KCCI-TV reports more than 20 police cruisers were at the scene. The 53-year-old man barricaded himself in a house and was eventually taken into custody.

WEBSTER COUNTY, IA (IRN) – One person is dead after a crash at an uncontrolled intersection in Webster County Sunday. A 72-year-old man collided with a vehicle driven by a 20-year-old. The 72-year-old man was killed, and the 20-year-old was ejected from the vehicle and taken to the hospital. His passenger, a 15-year-old, was also hospitalized. Neither driver was wearing a seat belt.

ARLINGTON, IA (IRN) – The sentencing for Chris Soules, an Iowa native turned reality TV star involved in a fatal northeast Iowa crash, will proceed Tuesday as planned, a judge has ruled. The Des Moines Register reports a judge on Friday denied a request to delay the sentencing of the 36-year-old from Arlington who gained a national fan base in 2015 when starring in ABC’s “The Bachelor.” Soules was originally charged with a felony for leaving the scene of a deadly accident following an April 2017 collision that killed Kenny Mosher, 66, of Aurora.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Former University of Iowa National Champion wrestler Tony Ramos is retiring from competition. Ramos is a three time All American and 2014 NCAA champion for the Hawkeyes. Ramos was taking part in the 2019 world team trials this weekend in Raleigh, North Carolina when he lost to a former Penn State national champion. After the match, Ramos walked to the center of the mat, removed his shoes, and left them. That’s a time honored tradition for retiring wrestlers.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Two people were shot and killed and two were injured in Cedar Rapids early Saturday morning, according to KCRG-TV. At around 1:20 a.m., Cedar Rapids Police responded to calls about a shooting in the parking lot of Iowa Smoke Shop. The victims of the shooting were in a vehicle in the parking lot at the store. An individual approached the vehicle and fired multiple shots. Police believe it was a targeted attack, but do not have a suspect or motive.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – An investigation is underway after a body was pulled from the Des Moines River. WHO-TV reports Polk County Deputies were to the Yellow Banks boat ramp after witnesses saw a body floating in the water. The body is of a middle-aged white male.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines Police arrested an allegedly drunk wrong-way driver early Saturday morning after they said he caused a three-vehicle crash that sent four people to a hospital, according to KCCI-TV. He’s from Texas.

IOWA (IRN) – Researchers at Iowa State University say we may see more monarch butterflies this year. Scientists have been tracking the largest population of wintering monarchs in Mexico since 2007. And depending on the weather, the butterflies could reach Iowa later this month or early June.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Police in Cedar Rapids responded to a shots fired call around 12:15 am today. KWWL-TV reports a male victim was taken to the hospital for a serious gunshot wound.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – An Iowa City student is facing charges after he brought knives to school, according to KCRG-TV. Police say students and staff alerting officers was key to preventing a violent act from happening.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Hoover High School and Meredith Middle School in Des Moines let students out early Friday after the storms damaged roofs on the schools. KCCI-TV reports hail from Thursday night combined with the heavy rains flooded the common area and cafeteria of Hoover High School. Meredith Middle School’s gym took the hardest hit during the storms. Both roofs will have to be replaced.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa’s unemployment rate remained at 2.4% in April for the 10th month in a row. Iowa has the nation’s third-lowest rate, behind only Vermont and North Dakota, and tied with New Hampshire.

KELLEY, IA (IRN) – Story County officials say three suspects have been charged in a violent sexual assault reported in Kelley. The incident happened in 2018. An 82-year-old woman was confronted by three males who entered her home uninvited and assaulted her. The three suspects sprayed the victim in the face with a chemical agent, temporarily blinding her, then struck her in the face and sexually assaulted her. The suspects then went to a second residence and stole $1,500 in property and a 1998 Cadillac. One was taken into custody in Texas, and the other two have not yet been apprehended.

MARSHALLTOWN, IA (IRN) – A second grade student from Marshalltown has died from the injuries he suffered after being hit by a car Wednesday. KGAN-TV reports Christian Maxon, 8, was on his way home from school. Witnesses say Christian was crossing a street when a vehicle driven by a 71-year-old hit him.

WEST DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Police have arrested one juvenile and more arrests are coming after a fight at Valley High School in West Des Moines sent a vice principal to the hospital Thursday. WHO-TV reports in a video you can see the group of students exchanging blows and Vice Principal David Perrigo try to stop the fight. He is struck by a student elbow and drops to the ground. As the fight continues Perrigo lies motionless. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation and released that day.

WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – A Waterloo police officer has been charged with Operating Under the Influence 1st Offense. KWWL-TV reports 33-year-old Jessica Brownell’s blood alcohol content was determined to be twice the legal limit after she crashed her vehicle Sunday around 2:20 a.m.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A round of severe thunderstorms made its way through parts of Iowa overnight, bringing large hail, damaging winds and lots of lightning. The National Weather Service reported quarter- to golf ball-sized hail and 60 mph wind gusts. Williamsburg was one of the hardest hit towns in the state, with one wind gust reaching 78 mph. Thousands were without power from Des Moines to the Quad Cities.
