IOWA CITY, IA – A four-week-old baby and her mother suffered burns and serious injuries when fireworks exploded on them during an illegal Iowa show. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says 36-year-old Margaret Limkemann and her baby were injured when fireworks launched sideways instead of upward at a party Saturday in Swisher. The projectile struck Margaret and exploded, catching fire. The mother attempted to remove the baby from her lap, tossing her onto a blanket. Both were transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. WILLIAMSBURG, IA (IRN) – Williamsburg Police have arrested a man on a charge of 1st Degree Murder after the death of a child. KCRG-TV reports police arrested 29-year-old Cody Stevenson Monday. The child is not related. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Iowa City police have arrested one suspect in connection with the death of a cab driver last week. WHO-TV reports taxi driver Ricky Lillie was found dead in his cab Wednesday. 41-year-old Curtis Cortez Jones was taken into custody in Mount Pleasant on Friday for a theft warrant and a parole violation. He is a suspect in the murder. The medical examiner’s office ruled Lillie’s death a homicide, and the cause of death is gunshot wounds to the head. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A mobile home sustained extensive damage during an overnight fire in Des Moines, according to KCCI-TV. Firefighters said one side of the home was engulfed in flames when they arrived. The roof collapsed over a bedroom, but everyone made it out safely. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Independence Day is being celebrated all across America. Monday night, fireworks and the Des Moines Symphony were on display for the annual Yankee Doodle Pops show at the Capitol. Yankee Doodle Pops is Iowa’s largest and most patriotic single day concert event. It’s also a fundraiser for local organizations.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Two men attacked a Papa John’s delivery driver in Des Moines Saturday night, shooting him with a shotgun as he fled, according to the Des Moines Register. Officers were dispatched after witnesses reported a loud boom and a man yelling for help. The victim says he was walking to a door of a home to deliver pizza when he was confronted by two men wearing masks. When the victim tried to run they shot him with a shotgun loaded with birdshot. CRESTON, IA (IRN) – A Creston woman faces arson charges after she admitted to intentionally setting a house on fire that she wanted condemned. 42-year-old Sheila Shoults was caught on security camera setting the fire. Police said this was the fourth time the house had caught fire. Shoults said she was “tired of strange people going in and out of the house,” and was concerned about children who went into the home as well. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A security guard is facing charges after he shot at a car at Water Works Park in a bizarre incident in May. KCCI-TV reports police charged Eugene McGrath with reckless discharge of a firearm causing property damage. A man was leaving the park around 1 a.m. when McGrath pulled in behind him and tried to make him stop. When the man didn’t, McGrath pulled in front of him and fired three shots into the radiator, handcuffed the man, and called police. Police say the man was under no obligation to stop. CHARLES CITY, IA (IRN) – One man is dead after multiple gunshots were fired at an apartment complex in Charles City. KIMT-TV reports a warrant has been issued for 1st degree murder for 36-year-old Antoine Williams, who is considered armed and dangerous. The victim was 20 years old. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Cedar Rapids Police responding to a shots fired call at a Walmart parking lot Sunday said they found two men in a car with gunshot wounds. KCRG-TV reports the car crashed into a guardrail in the parking lot after the shooting. Both were hospitalized, and one has life-threatening injuries. IOWA (IRN) – Breweries across Iowa are now able to sell wine. The law came about following legislation in 2009 that allowed wineries to sell beer. Brewery owners say this change is great for Iowa and will allow them to work with local wineries. The law comes as state lawmakers across the country look into regulations set up during Prohibition between 1920 and 1933.

KEITH COUNTY, NE (IRN) – Four motorcyclists died after a crash Saturday south of Lake McConaughy in western Nebraska. KETV reports the four were from Iowa. Nebraska troopers said a vehicle crossed the centerline and struck two motorcycles that were traveling in the opposite direction. Each motorcycle had two people on board. MONTICELLO, IA (IRN) – Authorities are investigating a small-plane crash that killed one person Saturday afternoon. Monticello police said the pilot, who was the sole occupant of the small aircraft, died after crashing around 4 p.m. in a cornfield near the Monticello Regional Airport, about 50 yards from the grass runway. CARROLL, IA (IRN) – A woman was killed and a teenager was taken to the hospital after a two car crash in rural Carroll County. According to the Iowa State Patrol, 17-year-old Kizer Brockman drove through a stop sign and struck the car driven by 61-year-old Debra Kock. Both cars ended up in a ditch. When Troopers arrived Kock was already dead. Brockman was hospitalized. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – An eastern Iowa teen received a perfect score on her ACT test. KCRG-TV reports Natasha Brisbine was surprised at the result. Her mom woke her up with the news. Brisbine says critical thinking was the key to getting a perfect score. That, and getting over her test anxiety.

DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – Two children in Davenport are recovering after they fell out of a second story window. WHO-TV reports their grandmother says the two five-year-olds were playing in a bedroom when the boy climbed out the window and the girl tried to pull him back in, but they both fell out. The girl has a broken leg and the boy a concussion, but they will be OK. CHARLES CITY, IA (IRN) – Police in Charles City are searching for a suspect and answers after a shooting late Friday night. KIMT-TV reports a victim was hospitalized, and the suspect has not been apprehended. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate says he’ll share some information requested by President Donald Trump’s commission investigating alleged voter fraud during the 2016 election. At least 24 states are pushing back or refusing to comply. The commission was formed by President Trump to investigate his widely debunked claim that millions of illegal votes cost him the popular vote in the 2016 election. Mississippi Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann, a Republican, said he won’t comply, telling members of the commission to “go jump into the Gulf of Mexico.” DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – Samuel Brown of Davenport landed another big one Friday, according to the Quad City Times. In May 2016, Brown wrestled a 45-pound flathead catfish to shore while fishing on the Mississippi. On Friday, he topped that. “I’m going to catch a big one today,” he told a friend. True to his word, he caught a flathead catfish that weighed nearly 60 pounds. “I opened its mouth,” he said, laughing. “I could just about put my head in there.”

NORTH LIBERTY, IA (IRN) – A Cedar Rapids man has been arrested for attempted murder. Ronald Gonterman is accused of stabbing another man four times yesterday near North Liberty. A 911 call came from a man saying he had been stabbed, but he didn’t know where he was. The sheriff’s office used 911 mapping to find him in the Hawkeye Wildlife area. The man identified Gonterman as the person who stabbed him. The victim also said Gonterman shot at him and tried to run him over with his truck. MASON CITY, A Mason City man is behind bars for abusing an infant under his care, according to KIMT-TV. 27-year-old Jeremy Rose, who is charged with child endangerment, a class C felony, harmed a five-month old child who was in his care on June 22. Police responded to a report of an infant who was unresponsive and having difficulty breathing. Doctors say the infant may have suffered a brain injury. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – Davenport police responded to a fatal car accident Thursday, according to WQAD-TV. The car went off the road, struck a retaining wall, and came to rest after hitting a parked vehicle. The driver, an adult male, and passenger were both transported to the hospital, where the driver later died. Police believe the crash was caused by a medical issue. NEWTON, IA (IRN) – The Jasper County Animal Rescue League has managed to save the life of what appears to be a three-month-old kitten. WHO-TV reports the kitten’s jaw is broken and it has suffered severe facial trauma. Authorities say some sort of fireworks exploded in the kitten’s face. NEWTON, IA (IRN) – Union representatives are speaking out after an assault of a staff member by an inmate at the Newton Correctional Facility. KCCI-TV reports an inmate, John Watson, assaulted a guard. Another inmate helped the guard until other staff arrived. The guard will be OK, but union officials say the facility is understaffed and dangerous. OTTUMWA, IA (IRN) – The United Way of Wapello County thanked its volunteers with a barbecue. KTVO-TV reports the group held the event Wednesday at Memorial Park in Ottumwa. United Way Executive Director Blaire Siems says this past year the organization had over 500 volunteers. Siems believes volunteerism is the best way to improve a community. She says if you see something you don’t like about your community, stand up, volunteer, and make it better.
